Blurry by Carina Adams
Release Date: January 11, 2017
Cecelia Merrill was used to being on her own. Lost and lonely, Lia couldn’t wait to graduate and watch her judgmental little town fade behind her. All she had to do was survive three more years of high school, and she was free. She wouldn’t let anything hold her back.
Craig Knightly had almost achieved what no one in his family had before – all he had to do was complete his student-teaching assignment, and in less than a year, he would have a college degree. He was ready to put down roots and start his life. Nothing was going to stand in the way of his dreams.
Sometimes all it takes is a moment for everything to change.
A student and her teacher. A coach and his athlete. An unexpected friendship. Forbidden feelings between an unlikely pair.
Neither is playing a game they can win.
Carina Adams is a new author to me, one I’m so glad I decided to take a chance on. Blurry is a very taboo student/teacher romance. The synopsis intrigued me, but I was a little hesitant at first because of the subject. These types of stories must be well written for me to really enjoy, and Carina did it flawlessly!
“Then, Coach turned my way. His eyes were hidden behind mirrored glasses, and I doubted he could see mine, but I felt like he saw more than I wanted him to. It was a feeling I got from him often. Almost as if even my best defenses weren’t enough to keep him out.”
Cecelia Merrill is a fierce heroine, especially for her age. She’s a 15-year-old girl who longs to escape her small judgmental town and prove everyone in it wrong. Her way out is an education and she focus on her love of sports to get her through the next three years. Lia takes care of herself since her mother is never around, she comes from a trailer park, and believes she doesn’t need anyone other than her two best friends Julie and Missy. She’s fiery, just like her red hair—smart, athletic, and independent.
“As her heart beat against mine, her fingers clutching my own tightly, I realized I did have the words to describe how I felt about Lia. It terrified me. I didn’t know what it meant. All I knew in that moment was—I loved her.”
Craig Knightly is the epitome of perfection. A 20-year-old senior in college who has the loving family, beautiful girlfriend, and a great group of friends. The only thing standing between him and graduation is completing his student teaching. And now the beautiful, yet angry girl on the varsity field hockey team he coaches.
“Sometimes I forget who we are—what we are. You make me happy, okay?” Lia made me happy, too. The line was clear. Who we were and who we could never be. A straight, black, thick line. Somewhere along the way, our line had gotten blurry.”
Craig and Lia instantly butt heads upon meeting. I think that’s what drew me into their story. I was curious to see where their indifference and relationship with each other would go. Craig recognizes her bad attitude as a way of protecting herself from others. He slowly starts tearing her walls down, wanting to protect her and take her under his wing as someone she can turn to—just like a teacher did for him once. They slowly build a friendship, but eventually everything starts to blur.
“Craig had somehow managed to break through. He had not only weaseled his way into my life—as disturbing as it was, he had wormed his way into the heart I had thought was impenetrable. He made me happy, he made me feel safe, and most of all, he made me feel like it was easy to care about me, that I wasn’t a burden.”
Blurry was an emotional ride for me—there were so many times I found myself in tears as my heart broke during the challenges they went through. Their love was forbidden, yet extremely beautiful. If you’re not a fan of the taboo student/teacher romance, put those feelings aside and give this one a try. Carina’s writing, along with Craig and Lia’s story is truly captivating.

About Carina Adams
Carina Adams has been writing and creating characters for as long as she can remember, allowing her to fall in love with the next man of her dreams with every new story.
Thankfully, fate stepped in and granted her the ultimate wish – a life full of men. Carina lives in a picturesque New England town with her husband, the man who ruined the thought of all others, and two amazing sons who always keep her on her toes.
Carina received her MBA in May, but would much rather play with her imaginary friends (the voices in her head) than work her 8 to 5. When she isn’t trying to juggle being a working mom with karate and football practices, surprising her children with her sci-fi movie knowledge, or writing, you can find her with her nose pressed against her kindle, laughing with friends, or living life vicariously as her Derby Girl persona, Writers Block.
