Synopsis

Fairy tales do come true—and so do tabloid scandals! New York Times bestselling author Marquita Valentine kicks off a juicy contemporary romance series with a novel about a prince whose best-laid plans go deliciously awry when he marries the maid next door.

Forced to flee to the United States with his siblings after their parents’ assassination, Crown Prince Colin Sinclair takes it upon himself to become the caretaker of his family while hiding out near Charlotte, North Carolina. But after a decade in hiding, the secret’s out and Parliament demands that Colin wed a princess of their choosing. Unwilling to play their game, Colin decides to marry an American instead, and he has the perfect candidate in mind.

As a home-service professional, Della Hughes doesn’t believe in storybook endings. But when her best friend and secret crush reveals that he’s a flesh-and-blood prince, she doesn’t know what to think. Still, she’ll do anything for Colin, including becoming his wife—in name only, of course. But when their plans to stay purely platonic go by the wayside, their fake honeymoon turns all too real. After a week of white-hot nights, Della can no longer deny her feelings—not with a happily ever after so tantalizingly close.

My Review

4 Stars!

In Royal Scandal, we get to meet the children of the Sinclair monarchy and the secrets that led to their exile. Modern day fairytales are some of my favorites to read, and this was a quick read I really enjoyed.

“There’s no such thing as happily ever after—at least not for a prince exiled to a foreign country.”

Royal Scandal is centered around Colin Sinclair—the eldest of the Sinclair siblings. After the death of the King and Queen, the children are exiled to a small town in North Carolina. Colin steps up to the role of guardian at a very young age. He keeps his teenage brother and twin sisters in line. And although he has no clue when it comes to bottles, diapers, and the care of babies—he takes on the role of father figure to his baby brothers, who are barely toddlers. Thankfully a feisty red head storms into his life and knows everything baby related.

“Her gaze meets mine, and there’s so much compassion and empathy in the depths of her eyes that I feel as if I’ve found a kindred soul in her.”

Della is the grounds keepers’ daughter who lives on the St. Claire estate. She cleans homes by day and dresses up as princesses for sick children by night. She’s just a regular small town girl from a working family. And after that confrontation with Colin, they build a decade long friendship. She also has natural mother instincts and willing stepped into helping Colin with his “boys.” Although Colin and Della secretly have feelings for each other, they both avoid stepping over the line of being “more”—afraid of ruining their friendship in anyway. That’s until they enter a marriage of convenience, and soon all their feelings were forced to the surface.

“Because when we are old, can barely remember our names, and are sitting by the pool, watching my boys’ children play…we will look back on this moment and regret that we weren’t brave enough, that we didn’t believe in us enough to try.”

There were so many parts of this story I loved. The Sinclair monarchy isn’t your typical ruling family–the crown is passed down from queen to queen, unlike most being to king. I admired the family aspect. They only had each other and they held on to that—each one always looking out for the other. Especially Colin and everything he gave up to take care of his siblings. I love Della and Colin’s relationship—both their friendship and when they decided to make their marital relationship “real.” However, I’m a little bit of a sucker when it comes to the push and pull of friends-to-lovers relationships. Even though I loved them together, I would have liked a little more of the angst or struggle that comes along with making the decision of crossing that line.

“Even if I wasn’t your wife, even if I hadn’t agreed to marry you, you are my best friend and I will always be on your side.”

Royal Scandal is the first book in the Royals in Exiled series, and I can’t wait to read about the rest of the Sinclair clan. If you’re a lover of modern day royals and friends-to-lovers, then I think you’ll enjoy this one. Royal Scandal is a fun read, full of sweet moments, and scandalous secrets to be learned.
